XML is central to many exciting publishing initiatives, especially bringing existing content to new media and devices. For nearly all publishers, forging into the future will involve XML. High-level and business-oriented, this session will peek under the hood to see what’s happening without dwelling on technical details. It will give you a concrete, practical explanation of XML and what it can do for you, highlighting the key facts businesspeople need to know in order to make decisions, increase efficiency, and drive change in your organization. It will also feature a participatory demonstration that will give you a true sense of XML’s power and importance. It will conclude with a discussion on the future of XML, a discussion of XML support in publishing software, and a look into the XML-based innovation some publishers are making today.
Keith Fahlgren is a Publishing Technology Engineer at O’Reilly Media. He’s been involved with a wide variety of XML-centric work there, from integrating content into Safari Books Online to building infrastructure around the Atom Publishing Protocol. He’s a member of the OASIS DocBook SubCommittee for Publishers, a group trying to make the DocBook XML standard more accessible for a wide range of professional publishers, and has played a key role in extending O’Reilly’s use of DocBook and the DocBook-XSL stylesheets. In addition to these successes keeping O’Reilly’s content as flexible and (re-)usable as possible, he’s also been a part of a number of failed attempts at creating the next best tool for (online) authoring (suggestions welcome!).
