Information to get the most out of the Rails Online Conference

Why an online conference?

The Rails Online Conference provides an ongoing forum for exploring the latest issues, without the expense or inconvenience of travel. It's our way of bringing a rich discussion of the Rails landscape to your desktop and keeping the conversation alive throughout the year.

How does it work?

In an online conference, participants log on and attend sessions, enter into discussions with other participants and presenters using the live text chat, and are able to pose questions and interact with people from all over the world. It has a similar structure to a physical conference, except that you hear the speakers discuss topics and watch their slide presentations via your computer from the convenience of your office or home. You'll take breaks between sessions and enjoy lively chat conversations with your fellow attendees.

Login Information

Download the current WebEx client before the event. It'll determine which version you need. Login to WebEx with your Registration ID and click "Join Now".

Teleconference information

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This WebEx service includes a feature that allows audio and any documents and other materials exchanged or viewed during the session to be recorded. By joining this session, you automatically consent to such recordings. If you do not consent to the recording, do not join the session.

Instructions for Participating

Please plan to join at least 10 minutes before the start time to check system compatibility.

You may be prompted to enter your name, email address, meeting password (RailsOnline), and your registration ID to enter the conference.

To join the event more quickly, you can set up the Event Manager before the event starts (this is especially important for Mac users). Although the set-up page indicates this is for Windows, the correct client for other systems will be installed as well. Go to: https://oreillymedia.webex.com/oreillymedia/ecsetup.php?frommail=1

Once you join the conference, you'll see the welcome slides in the Event Center window, with the Participants Panel and Chat Window on your right. Please feel free to chat with other attendees. To do so, please post to All Participants.

Audio for the conference will be broadcast over your computer. There will be silence or faint music until the conference begins. Please make sure that your volume is adjusted accordingly, on both your computer and in the Audio Broadcast controls (on the Communicate menu). As an alternative, you may dial into the teleconference.

Troubleshooting

Joining the Meeting

The most frequent problem is when people can't join the meeting. They will get to the Event in Progress window and not move beyond that. Please convey this information:

  • Try using another browser to join.
  • If that doesn't work, then download the WebEx client (it works for all systems even though it just says Windows). Sometimes, especially with Macs, the setup isn't able to automatically push out the client.
  • If you are still not able to join, please call WebEx Tech Support for assistance:

Problems with Audio

  • The audio broadcast is choppy or has cut out:

    If this happens, stop and restart the audio broadcast using the controls on the Communicate menu.

  • Audio too quiet:

    Make sure you've turned up the volume both on your computer and in the WebEx controls on the Communicate menu. If it is still too quiet, please dial into the teleconference.

Attention Mac Users

We have been experiencing problems with Mac users being disconnected from our online events. WebEx engineers have isolated the problem and are working to resolve it, however, it has not yet been fixed. If you are disconnected from Event Center, please wait a moment and log back in again. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Post Event Information
