John McCaffrey
Developer, Independent

I’m a former Java web developer, fully converted to Rails, attending RailsConf for the first time.

I’ve been to a few of the smaller conferences. I spoke at both WindyCityRails conferences in Chicago

You can see my slides, demo app, and a video from the conference here Generating PDFs in Ruby

Over the last year I’ve begun focusing on Performance tuning of web apps, and its something that I really enjoy doing. I’m posting tips & tricks up at RailsPerformance.blogspot.com and I’m hoping to meet up with people and trade stories at RailsConf.

A few things I may ask:
  • What have you done to speed up your tests?
  • What have you done to speed up your DB?
  • How do you measure and monitory performance?
  • What was the biggest improvement you’ve made?

If possible, I’ll be doing an ignite presentation on ‘Application Performance and your bottom line’, how the performance of your app impacts user satisfaction, operating costs, and most importantly overall revenue.

I hope to meet some cool people, and learn a lot!

I really enjoyed the music jam! It was better than bands at most bars, and it was so cool to see programmers I know in one context, just completely rock out in another context.
