The PhoneGap Project: Designing for the Device Neutral Mobile Web
Created at iPhoneDevCamp 2008, PhoneGap is an open source initiative for bringing native device capabilities to mobile browsers. With PhoneGap, you can author apps in HTML and JavaScript and still take advantage of native mobile device capabilities like geo location, camera, vibration, local storage and sound. Learn how to build apps for iPhone, Android, Nokia S60 and Blackberry and how to contribute back to the PhoneGap project.
In this three-hour workshop, attendees will become familiar with the PhoneGap framework, and will learn how to build applications for a variety of mobile devices. The workshop will cover:
- An overview of mobile web opportunities and platform landscape
- Getting started building applications for iPhone and Android with PhoneGap
- Overcoming barriers to cross-device development
- Differences in capabilities across devices

The PhoneGap simulator didn’t work and the PhoneGap library .zip file had errors during installation (Windows XP). The speakers did not have workarounds for these problems.
Logistically, the resolution of their display wasn’t set appropriately, and their iPhones produced feedback over the microphone and speakers. Both of these issues were raised, but the speakers were not able to resolve.
It was disappointing that after a 3.5 hour workshop, I was not given the instructions necessary to build a simple Hello World app.

Too bad the demos required macs and iphones, and the phonegap simulator bug on linux prevents us from using that yet….
I’ll try it out on android/eclipse when I get a chance.
