Free Geek has equipped thousands of low-income families with Linux computers. Starting at 2:00pm, Keith Lofstrom will lead a tour from the Convention Center to the Free Geek facility at 1731 SE 10th Avenue, Portland. The Free Geek staff will show how Free Geek volunteers learn to recycle or repair obsolete computers, returning them to the community. See how Free Geek turns e-waste into education, using community principles and Open Source Software.
If the weather is good, we will walk the 1.6 miles from the Convention Center to Free Geek. Otherwise, we will take the southbound #70 bus (to Milwaukie) from NE 3rd and Multnomah (a block north of the convention center, leaving at 1:37pm and every 15 minutes thereafter, cost $1.75 per adult), and get off at SE 11th and Clay, walking two blocks southwest to Free Geek at SE 10th and Market.
After the tour, you may join us for a two block walk north to the Lucky Labrador Brew Pub at 915 SE Hawthorne Blvd., a popular open source community hangout (free wifi, of course). The #70 bus will take you back north to the convention center, or you can stroll across the Hawthorne Bridge to downtown Portland. There are a dozen restaurants within a 6 block radius of 10th and Hawthorne.
For more bus information, see the trimet website.
