Interested in starting or participating in an open source project? Here are some ways to make sure that your project will fail or have an unhealthy community. Once you know what not to do, you’ll have an easier time figuring out what you should do. We’ll be looking at patterns at varying degrees of scale, from the individual level up to the level of determining the governance of a new open source project. These patterns are drawn from years of experience at the Apache Software Foundation and the Open Source Applications Foundation, among others.

Ted Leung is a member of the Apache Software Foundation, where he was a founding member of the Apache XML project. In addition to being one of the original developers of the Xerces-J XML parser, he is a member of the Apache Labs PMC, the Incubator PMC and has helped shepherd several projects through the ASF incubation process.

Ted has also participated in the Chandler project at the Open Source Applications Foundation, where he worked on the Chandler Desktop client, the Chandler Server, and open source/community management issues.
