The meteoric growth of MySQL through the 1990s and 2000s were marked by some big in the enterprise database market—a willingness to adopt open source software for critical business applications, and the emergence of a new class of database-backed web applications that needed a simpler, cheaper and more flexible storage model than the established vendors provided. Today we see that change accelerating. CIOs, IT staff and developers are exploring new non-relational systems for applications that need a different mix of services and guarantees. So-called “NoSQL” systems, columnar stores and systems like Apache Hadoop are getting deployed to solve new problems. I’ll survey the state of the market, highlight the risks and opportunities and forecast the areas of growth and erosion facing the industry over the next decade.

Very interesting contrast to Baron’s speach. I felt Baron’s speach at a much more emotional level but Mike’s comments also hit home. The future is a murky place.
