Mysql Data Warehousing – A Survival Guide

This presentation provides lessons learned during a 5 years of building and operating a Mysql Data Warehouse at Linden Lab (makers of Second Life). Both the strengths and the limitations of Mysql as a Data Warehousing platform are discussed and specific tips are provided for building Mysql warehouse systems that are scalable and maintainable.

Specific areas covered include:

• Warehouse schema designs that work with Mysql • Effective use of slaves for load distribution • Design patterns for moving data from source systems • ETL job design best-practices and gotchas • Infrastructure Planning • Optimizing the database and the I/O subsystem • Archiving strategies including using Amazon S3 • Knowing your limits – When you need a warehousing-optimized DB

Marius is a Data Warehousing professional with over 20 years of experience and has participated in over a hundred business intelligence implementations. Most recently, he served as Director of Data Warehousing for Linden Lab where he started and built the Data Warehousing and real-time Analytics group. Previously, he was co-founder and CEO of Integral Results, a leading San Francisco Data Warehouse Consulting company which was acquired in 2000 by Idea Integration.

Steffan’s career in technology spans nearly 25 years and includes roles in software development, networking, database administration and engineering management.

He has over a decade of experience in the design, implementation, and operation of multi-terabyte databases on a variety of platforms including MySQL, Oracle, Sybase and Microsoft SQL Server.

He currently manages Data Warehouse and Analytics infrastructure at Linden Lab, the makers of Second Life
