With servers having the power of supercomputers from a few years ago, MySQL and other applications now have plenty of horsepower available to them.

For those cases where you need to wring all the power available, there are some specific tuning interactions between Linux and MySQL that can help speed things along, and make efficient use of all the resources.

  • NUMA: why memory localization matters – or doesn’t
  • kernel IO schedulers, RAID controllers, and why you shouldn’t optimize things you don’t know about.
  • Huge Pages – good for Java and MySQL?
  • thread configuration options in InnoDB

Of course, testing in the real world is required to know if any tuning helps or hurts, so we’ll cover some techniques for that, too.
