Gone are the days when MySQL is the only real (and free) choice for storing all your data. Nowadays we have a a lot of seemingly overlapping and redundant options. But each has its place—a role in which it’s a natural fit for the problem at hand.

This talk looks at the general classes of data storage (and indexing) systems available today (SQL, NoSQL, in-memory, on disk, etc.), using the needs of criagslist.org for some real-world perspective on what works well where.

We’ll cover several specific technologies along the way, looking at the use cases, deployment details, and lessons learned from running in a busy production environment.

The talk will conclude with a wishlist of technologies that would help make our infrastructure more complete.
