SSD Deployment Strategies for MySQL

This session is all about SSDs. In the first half of the session, I’ll show basic performance numbers of HDD, Intel X25-E and Fusion I/O. Basic performance means (concurrent) random reads, random writes, sequential writes, fsyncs, ext3 vs xfs, etc. SSD specific issues such as write performance deterioration will also be covered. In the second half of the session, I’ll present about SSD deployment strategies for MySQL, for example:

• Which should I spend, RAM or SSD?
• Is it fine to store all files on SSD or is it faster to store some files (i.e. InnoDB log files) on HDD?
• Does Nehalem CPU perform well against older Xeon on Fusion I/O? How performance differs on disk i/o bound workloads?
• How redundancy overhead matters, such as H/W RAID, S/W RAID, DRBD? Is RAID 5 SSD fast enough? Do traditional H/W raid cards perform well for many(4-8) SSDs?
