Modern object-relational mapping systems like ActiveRecord (Rails) allow developers to write complex applications without a single line of SQL. But how good are ORMs like ActiveRecord, DataMapper, and Sequel?

In this talk, we will:

  • Examine the dominant Ruby ORMs and their approach to database abstraction.
  • Look at the SQL they generate when used with MySQL.
  • Compare their performance to raw SQL.
  • Talk about what developers need to know about MySQL, even when using an ORM.
