Alasdair Allan is a senior research fellow in Astronomy at the University of Exeter, where he leads the development of closed loop autonomous systems for transient event follow-up. As part of the eSTAR Project he is building a peer-to-peer distributed network of telescopes which, acting autonomously, will reactively schedule observations of time-critical events. He has been the lead, and co-author, on several astronomical software standards and has been the senior editor of two conference proceedings on heterogeneous telescope networks. On the side Alasdair runs a small technology consulting business writing bespoke software and building open hardware, and is currently developing a series of iPhone applications to monitor and manage cloud based services.
